Summary of Patriarchal Soicety – Feminist Theories of Patriarchy by Linda Napikoski.

Napikoski defines as Patriarchal ‘a general structure in which men have power over women.’(Napikoski, p1,( 2017), Patriarchal Soicety – Feminist Theories of Patriarchy.)    In addition Society ‘is the entirety of relations of a community ‘(Napikoski, p1,( 2017), Patriarchal Soicety – Feminist Theories of Patriarchy . Therefore, a Patriarchal society consists if a male dominated force that forms the structure that runs throughout society and in individual relationships.  Napikoski states that patriarchy is a central feminist theory. The article refers to Greek patriarchs, was where a society’s power was controlled and passed down through the elder male’s lines. The elder males within families held the authority in the society. The term when all the assets such as titles and property are passed down the male line is referred to as Patrilineal. The second waves of feminism in the 1960’s examined this factor in society and they observed how within household women where increasingly becoming heads, female leadership. They also found that rather than stating that individual men oppressed women it was in fact a larger more underlying issue of patriarchal and phallocentric society.

Napikoski also refers to Gerda Leaner a western feminist who’s 1986 theoretical book ‘ The Creation of Patriarchy,’ claims to trace the rise of patriarchal society back to the second millennium. Leaner states that there are many complex elements involved including ecological, cultural and historical factors which influenced lifestyle changes and the adaptation of new circumstances. During the Neolithic Era men where in herder tribes, they learned how to domesticate animals and thus the ‘herder men’ where the first humans to identify the idea of private ownership. Once this was established they started to create their own blood lines.  Therefore, beginning the first patriarchal families. She then argues these points stating that before these developments ‘male dominance was not a feature of human society in general.’ (Napikoski, p1,( 2017), Patriarchal Soicety – Feminist Theories of Patriarchy
Women where actually the key and kept human society and the communities going whilst all the social and legal power was controlled by men.

Bell Hooks, American feminist and writer hold the opinion on feminism and patriarchy that ‘Visionary feminism is a wise and loving politics. It is rooted in the love of male and female being, refusing to privilege one over the other. The sole of feminist politics is the commitment to ending the patriarchal domination of women and men, girls and boys.’
She also highlights the point that ‘We have to constanly critique imperialist white supremacist patriarchal culture because it is normalized by mass media and rendered unproblematic.’

Yvonne Aburrow: ‘The Patriarchal/ kyriarchal/hegemonic culture seeks to regulate and control the body- especially women’s bodies, and especially black women’s bodies- because women, especially black women, are constructed as the Other, the site of resistance to the kyriarchy.
