5A1
Demonstrate a critical
understanding of the aesthetic, cultural, historical, technological, social,
political or other contexts relevant to individual subject disciplines. (Knowledge
and understanding) (Research / critical awareness)
|
I have collected a large amount of research from a verity of
sources for example, books , TV, Newsarticals and journals. By using a wide range of resources, this
enabled me to gain different opinions on the subject I was tackling, and
taking in all of the views into account enabled me to form my own point of view.
I also increased my cirital awareness on the topic of gender and masculinity
, building a bigger picture of the effects be that positive or negative if
one gender was to be seen as superior over the other.
|
Excellent.
|
5A2
Demonstrate an awareness of the
relationship between the theoretical and practical contexts of their own
creative concerns. (Knowledge and understanding) (problem
analysis/definition)
|
From analysis the chosen piece of research I was then able to find
ideas and themes that could be applied to my practical investigation. Articles
from papers was a source that I found useful. The Daily Mail piece about ‘Legs-
it’. This article perfectly illustrates the points that I was making about
the way female MPs are viewed. And this evoked my anger and gave me then main
theme for my investigation.
|
Excellent.
|
5B1
Evidence the ability to use logic,
reasoning and critical judgement to analyse ideas from a range of primary and
secondary sources. (Cognitive skills) (Critical awareness)
|
I have taken opinions and theories from a wide range of resources and
from this been able to carry out my own, individual research into the
subject. I found from looking into others theories such as ‘The default man’-
(Grayson Perry’s book The decent of man), and adopting that theory I was able
to then able to find connections in texts and debate with the points following
further research.
|
Very Good.
|
5C1
Evidence the capacity for
undertaking practical and theoretical research that demonstrates an informed
application of critical, effective and testable processes. (Practical and
professional skills) (research)
|
I took into consideration the ideas and views of others, formed my
own and started to produce work based on that. I then did further research
into my subject in order to enhances my understanding and looked into the work
of practicing artist and experimented with new process, for example the
protest embroidery of Shannon Downey. This
was ideal because taking on a technique of image making that I had never tried
before and that was traditional feminine, allowed me to challenge that stigma
and still produce work that has the aim of showing empowerment and freedom.
|
Excellent.
|
5D1
Organise and carry out
self-directed projects and communicate outcomes through written and other
appropriate forms. (Key transferable skills) (professionalism / technical
competence / visual quality)
|
I have kept up to date with task set, attended all sessions and successful
completed written and practical investigations. I also feel I have successfully
communicated my subject theme through both written and practical exploration,
because, from doing a wide amount of research and finding theories and ideas
that I either agreed or disagreed with, I formed my own opinions. From this I
was then able to highlight key points of interest and build up my practical
investigation.

I knew that from the start of the module
that I wanted to investigate and research issues relating to gender equality,
and in particular feminism. I have found increasingly that this is a really
important issue for me and I hold a strong interest and opinion towards it.
After seeing Emma Watsons speech that she made at the UN summit a few years
ago , I found myself strongly agreeing with some of the statements she made.
But as I have discovered by doing the research for this module it was a
subject that I knew little about. The main conclusion that I drew from this
project is that gender really dose need to be equal, for the befits of both sexes.
I started off my investigation but reading Grayson Perry new book ‘The Decent
of Man’. In it he tries to tackles the subject of masculinity in society and
the impact it is having. This was a excellent resource to go to, firstly because
Perry comes from the very unique perspective of being a transsexual. He part
takes in both what societies states are male and female activities for example
riding motor bikes and wearing dresses. His opinion, I thought was valuable
as he does have some understanding into both sides of the argument. But
whilst reading it felt like Perry’s overall view of masculinity was that it
was a negative influence within society. This was when he constructed the
theory of the ‘Default Man.’ I found this point extremely important and true,
especially within the political sector. This theory then became the center in
which my investigation revolved around. Sparking off from this I collected
different views and theories into what would the possibilities and consequence
of have a gender equal society. A report issued by The Samaritans was a turning
point in my opinion gender equality. The report investigated into the causes
of male suicide. It stated that a loss of masculine power was a cause of men ending
their own lives. So, therefore my opinion from believing that women need to
have more power over men, to now that has to be completely equal in order to
try and prevent things like this happening. Women and Men need to be given
equal power and rights and the stigmas for both genders eliminated. But it remains
and seems that some male perceptions of women still have influences within
popular culture. ‘The Male Gaze’ – (Laura Mulvey) was another key theory. She
claimed that cinema played a significant role in the gender divide. The image
of having the strong male hero, who is dominant, powerful and in control and
women objectified and made to fit for the heterosexual man’s desire. This theory was then reflected and in some
ways proved, within a recent article published by The Daily Mirror, objectifying
two most prominent female politicians currently in the UK, by the way they
were dressed.
From this as a starting point it enabled
me to develop the subject for my practical investigation. I gained a greater
understanding into my subject of this by reading books, such as Catlin Moran’s
‘How to be a woman’ and researching further feminist theories. My aim was to tackle
this part of the module with an experimental approach. I initially felt that
the A5 book was very restrictive and was hesitant to start, as I normally
like to work large scale and do a large amount of test prints. However, I
found as I went through it that it was useful way of seeing my development
and it helped me gain a greater understanding of where my project was going
and allowed me to organize my thought process. Thus, it helped me push myself
to experiment more with different materials and mediums such as screen
printing, fabric and painting straight into the book. The end result, the
final book, I am overall happy and pleased with how my experimental approach has
helped me to create some colourful and interesting piece. I think that I have
shown the female from in a new and unobjectfing way, whilst employing some of
the theories visited in my essay and that of current practitioners such as
Shannon Downey. I regret not screen printing more onto the fabrics as the initial
experiments of this where clearer that what I was drawing /printing was anatomical.
But this process was very time consuming and time was tight at the end so I
painted straight onto the fabric using the printing ink. This worked well, as
I was able to make piece faster, larger and found it less restrictive as I
was able to cover most of the material with the shapes and colour. Colour
theory may have been useful to look into as well , as I picked the colours
mainly based on aesthetical reasons, not thinking much about the connotations
that go with them.
In the future, as well I need to get my thoughts
and key points in paper more and plan them. My essay question started out way
too big and was not focused, as such I overcame this by going back and looking
at what my ideas were and what I was aiming for. I needed to have done this sooner
and so I need to take time next module to link up my ideas as so I can create
a constructive and focused argument.
