“When Rudy Giuliani became mayor of New York in 1993, his belief in the 'Broken Windows' theory led him to implement the 'Zero Tolerance' crime policy. Crime dropped dramatically, significantly, and continued to for the next ten years.
Personally, I feel the time has come for women to introduce their own Zero Tolerance policy on the Broken Windows issues in our lives - I want a Zero Tolerance policy on 'All The Patriarchal Bullshit'. - Caitlin Moran , How to be a women.
'When Simone de Beauvoir said, “One is not born a woman—one becomes one,” she didn’t know the half of it.'- Caitlin Moran.
Simone de Beauvoir- political activist, social theorist and feminist. Wrote the book the 'Second Sex' deals and investigates the treatment of women through out the ages. And is often accounted for , for triggering the 'second wave of feminism.' or this is opposed by Moran when she states that there are all these different waves but looking back it seems more like and 'incoming tided' - Caitlin Moran, How to be a women. But Beauvoir's makes an interesting and contemporary statement in her quote above, she separates 'gender' from 'sex'.

Initial prints.
I have started off this practical research by looking into the parts of women bodies that are sexualised and objectified the most. The breasts are one. I decided to mono print these shapes as I wanted to work with shape from the off and by using print I got a lot of quick experiments out that I could later work into. I found this a really effective way of working.
I chose pink becuase just for this part of the project I wanted to conform to stereotypes. the reason for this being is so I can start to pull things out that visually may help me to move away from this and into what I am aiming to do.
The print below, I really like. I think that the almost scientific style suites the subject , could I take this further?
I may also simplify the shapes down into a graphic style , so very simple may help communicate better?.

Rational / proposal for practical cop - Study task 8
I want to focus on feminism, main how women are still viewed within society today , I am going to start off by study similarities and differences between today and passes society. Then try though shape and print to create piece of work the empower women. I intend to read several books including Caitlin Moran's "How to be a women" and look into why protests such as the women march that has recently occurred still messer in a day and age where it is claimed the gender equality has improve, when protest like this where performed by the suffragette movement in the 1900's. I aim to gain from this information, different options on how women are viewed and treated within society and what changes in there eyes have really taken place and how they think the situation could improve. I will build on my own feminist views around this subject using the new information I find. As I carry out this visual investigation I will hopefully narrow down to specific points and the more resolved outcomes will I hope reflect and communicate these points.
Plan :
Starting point -
Read Caitlin Moran's 'How to be a women'
take key notes , quotes and start developing visually from them. Also take note of any-other theorists that share or appose opinons.
Research into modern day women marches- why are they happening? what is the aim? who or what are they centred towards and how dose this prove that gender equality is still not present in todays society.
Print, create shape based work based on findings that can communicate/ show opinions and or points that collectively come for my own and other views.
By using print and shape as a medium and process, it means that the images can have the intention to be mass produced and shape is a strong visual communicator that if used well can produce some clear and sticking outcomes.

Post Christmas reveiw. Study task 7.
What are the main subject area/ question the illustrator is looking into :
- Western Politics has a lack of diversity. The leaders we choose tend to be white, wealthy and male. How dose the public view of people from different backgrounds and genders affect this and how dose popular culture effect this?
What are the strengths in how they have responded to this subject area?
Visual Journal - Plan how you are going to approach it?
Print media- shape.
Have a look at editorial imagery and come at the chosen subject matter with a new angle.
How have they responded to the visual journal element?
Need to start it and define how your going to use it use blog as a tool to help with this.
And 3 areas that could be development further:
Feminism
civil rights
Masculinity.
How effectively is the illustrator synthesising research, contextual analysis and their own practical explorations?
- 'bull in a china shop'
- Machismo- define - builders - red Indian , builders.
- The asent of man.
What are the next step with the research project, practical and theoretical?
Textre or shape ?
get making.
